Maude (Central Otago) 2022 EMW Pinot Noir

Winery description

"A celebration of two blocks of mature Pinot Noir from the Mt Maude Vineyard. As the name suggests, the blocks face opposite directions. Made in a different style - 100% whole cluster, clone 10-5, often only one pigaege during the ferment - definitely a unique winemaking twist on Pinot production. A bewitching perfume, paler in colour yet full, luscious and complex. Love it or hate it, this Pinot Noir certainly creates some debate."

Maude (Otago) 2022 Pinot Noir

Listed in the 2019 Fine Wines of New Zealand list

winery note
"Maude’s Pinot Noir combines fruit from 5 sub–regions within Central Otago, each region contributed uniquely to the blend. Fermented very traditionally in open topped tanks, hand plunged, indigenous yeasts with a portion of whole bunch in each fermenter to create complexity. A month on skins for tannin development prior to gentle pressing through our basket press, then maturation in French oak barriques for 10 months before bottling. The result; a complex dark and brooding wine with aromas and flavours of black fruits, violets and wild thyme.

Blackcurrant, bramble, dark cherry, plum, smoke, velvet. A savoury and structural expression of Central Otago Pinot Noir where precision and detail replace volume and mass."

Pasion de Bobal (Utiel-Requena) 2021 Spain

89 Points - James Suckling
"This has aromas of mahogany blueberry, chili chocolate and roasted mushroom. Woody and firm with full body and chewy tannins. Drink until 2024" James Suckling
Gold Medal – Gilbert Gaillard

New from Sierra Norte, This is a stunning example of Utiel-Requenas' noble variety Bobal. This estate is pioneering in regenerating the quality in these local varieties. Proving ever popular with drinkers and critics alike. Previous vintage of this wine even won 4 gold medals. !!!

A very deep black cherry colour with a light-purple rim. On the nose, nice red berry and black fruit aromas, such as strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants are underpinned by creamy, slightly toasty oak, together with touches of spice and liquorice. Very flavoursome on the palate, fruit-forward, with rounded tannins, good acidity and slight hints of vanilla, smoke and toast. A wine with both individual character and harmonious balance.

Pegasus Bay (Waipara) 2020 Merlot Cabernet

94 Points - James Suckling
94 Points - Cameron Douglas MS
94 Points -Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
4.5 Stars - Michael Cooper

The wine has a deep, ruby colour. The merlot has provided purple plum flavours and a plump, fleshy, mid-palate structure. Cassis elements and a backbone of mouth-filling, ripe tannins come from the Cabernet Sauvignon. Small portions of Cabernet Franc and malbec donate an ethereal, lifted bouquet, the latter giving a whiff of rose petals, as well as filling out the structure and adding to its length. It is a big, dense, chewy wine, which expands in the mouth and has a lingering, spicy after-taste.

Pegasus Bay (Waipara) 2021 Pinot Noir

95 Points - Cameron Douglas MS
5 Stars - Michael Cooper

The wine has a vibrant carmine hue. Its aromas and flavours are a complex interplay of fruity and savoury elements, suggesting cherries, raspberries and blackberries, intermingled with roast game, grilled mushrooms, black olives, liquorice and coffee. There is a dense core of fruit in the mouth that is supported by a backbone of firm, ripe tannins which flow evenly through the palate and should help the wine age gracefully.

Penfolds (Barossa Valley) 2021 RWT 798 Shiraz

19/20 Points - Matthew Jukes, mathewjukes.com

98 Points - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot

Commercial description
"The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in the early 1990s. Naturally, now no longer a ‘trial’, RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. The alphanumeric Bin designation 798 was bestowed upon the wine from the 2016 vintage. Stylistically, RWT is contemporary, opulent and finely tuned. An interesting contrast to the well-established Grange, which is a more concentrated, muscular and assertive style. RWT is made from Barossa Valley shiraz grapes primarily selected for their aromatic qualities, varietal typicity, fine tannins and plush texture. Maturation in French oak provides another contrast to Grange. The result is a wine that redefines Barossa Valley shiraz at the highest quality level. While delightfully approachable on release, RWT Bin 798 has the concentration and balance to age for many years.

Commercial description
"The fruit profile is a delight, oak playing no role in the aromatics. Shiraz, unadulterated! The descriptors need to be coaxed from the glass with a gentle swirl. Fruits of the forest are first to emerge, berry conserve, strawberry flan and rhubarb tart. There is a hit of confectionary, reminiscent of red glace cherries. Savoury notes include German Blutwurst spiced sausage, pan scrapings from roast lamb and salt cured beef with black peppercorns. Ferric notes of iron filings and whetstone swarf round out an impressive showing. PALATE True to form, the palate is quite savoury. Japanese nori paper and olive brine offer a very morish umami nuance. Fresh blueberry and mulberry leaf anchor the core of the mid-palate. Exotic spices adding intrigue, Alleppey turmeric, toasted cumin, pimento. The tannins are very tactile, comparable to Dutch cocoa. A classic St Henri that will reward extended time in the cellar."
